A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.

The successful bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets domestically and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the company president, a familiar bidder at the annual January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This new acquisition tops his own record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction concluded.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied customer.
