The State of Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Makers Regarding Autism Claims

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump seeking election to the United States Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding safety concerns of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the makers of acetaminophen, asserting the companies concealed safety concerns that the pain reliever presented to pediatric brain development.

The lawsuit follows thirty days after President Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between taking acetaminophen - also known as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in children.

Paxton is filing suit against the pharmaceutical giant, which previously sold the medication, the exclusive pain medication approved for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he claimed they "misled consumers by making money from suffering and marketing drugs regardless of the dangers."

Kenvue asserts there is no credible evidence linking Tylenol to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to increase profits," Paxton, from the Republican party, declared.

The company stated officially that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the security of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of women and children in America."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "continuously evaluated the pertinent research and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a established connection between using acetaminophen and autism."

Associations representing medical professionals and health professionals agree.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said acetaminophen - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and fever, which can create serious health risks if left untreated.

"In over twenty years of research on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any stage of gestation leads to neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the group commented.

This legal action cites current declarations from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is allegedly unsafe.

Last month, the former president raised alarms from public health officials when he told women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to use Tylenol when sick.

The FDA then released a statement that doctors should contemplate reducing the consumption of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a direct connection" between the medication and autism in young ones has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who oversees the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to undertake "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the cause of autism in a short period.

But experts cautioned that finding a unique factor of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the result of a complicated interplay of inherited and external influences - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of enduring cognitive variation and condition that influences how people encounter and engage with the world, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his lawsuit, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for the Senate - alleges the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the research" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case seeks to make the firms "eliminate any commercial messaging" that claims Tylenol is reliable for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit parallels the grievances of a group of parents of young ones with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the manufacturers of Tylenol in 2022.

Judicial authorities threw out the lawsuit, declaring investigations from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
